Mr. N. Treacy Mr. N. Treacy
237. Mr. N. Treacy asked the Minister for Justice the immigration or entry conditions imposed on visitors to Ireland, including new age travellers; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [5076/97]
Minister for Justice (Mrs. Owen) Nora Owen
Minister for Justice (Mrs. Owen): The grounds on which a person may enter, be refused entry or be allowed remain in the State are set out in the various Orders made on foot of the Aliens Act, 1935 and the European Communities Act, 1972.
These Orders, copies of which have been placed in the library of the Houses of the Oireachtas, include: the Aliens Order 1946; the Aliens (Amendment) Order 1975; the European Communities (Aliens) Regulations 1977; the European Communities (Rights of Residence for non-Economically Active Persons) Regulations 1997.
The legislative provisions in question distinguish non-nationals by reference to their nationality only — essentially European Economic Area nationals and others — and not by reference to social or other characteristics.
