Written Answers. - Beach Improvement Grant Scheme.

61. Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for the Environment the amount that was allocated for the beach improvement grant scheme in each of the years from 1990 to 1996; and if he will make a statement on the impact of this scheme. [16546/96]

Minister for the Environment (Mr. Howlin): Grants totalling £983,000 were paid for amenity and environmental works at selected beaches in 1990. The scheme was discontinued in 1991.

Grants are currently available under the urban and village renewal sub-programme for a range of environmental measures, including those proposed for beach areas, as part of overall urban and village improvement projects. I have no proposals, however, to reintroduce a grants scheme specifically for beach improvement works.
