Written Answers. - Disabled Persons' Housing Grants.

47. Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for the Environment if he has satisfied himself with the working of the disabled persons reconstruction grant regulations; the changes, if any, he intends to make to these regulations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6065/96]

[2214] Minister of State at the Department of the Environment (Ms McManus): The Housing (Disabled Persons and Essential Repairs Grants) Regulations, 1993 provide for the payment to housing authorities of grants in respect of necessary works of adaptation to accommodation for occupation by disabled persons. The scheme is administered by the housing authorities who decide the level of funding to be provided for the service in their area and the relative priority to be afforded to individual applicants. Authorities are recouped 50 per cent of their grant payments, up to a maximum of £4,000 per case, by my Department. I am satisfied that local authorities generally are providing a reasonable level of service in terms of processing applications, the level of grant being paid and the discharge of claims for payment and I have no proposals at present to amend the regulations governing the scheme.
