435. Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for the Marine the number of persons employed in the constituency office and the private office by him and the Minister(s) of State at his Department; the rank of each person; their salaries; the functions of the constituency office [876] and the private office; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Minister for the Marine (Mr. Barrett): I have three staff employed in my office on contract and whose salaries are shared equally with the Department of Defence, reflecting my dual ministerial responsibilities. The positions held by these staff are: programme manager, special adviser and personal assistant. The personal assistant is based in the Department of Defence. In addition, I have a private secretary, higher executive officer, who is a civil servant. The total cost to the Marine Vote is £72,682.39.

There are eight staff engaged in the Minister of State's office. Apart from the Minister of State's private secretary, higher executive officer and two clerical assistant typists, who are civil servants, the following are employed on a non-established contract basis: one special adviser, one personal secretary, one personal assistant and two civilian drivers. The total salary costs for these staff is £158,818.02.

I do not have a constituency office in the Department of the Marine, all related matters are dealt with by my office in the Department of Defence. The Minister of State's constituency office is staffed by his personal secretary, his personal assistant and two clerical assistant typists.

The private office of the Minister of State deals with those matters which involve the exercise of departmental responsibilities, as opposed to constituency related work.

In addition, the Marine Vote bears half the salary cost of the Minister's Personnel Assistant who is based in his constituency office in the Department of Defence. This brings total costs up by £7,800.39 to £72,682.39.

In addition, the Minister of State employs two civilian drivers at a cost of £26,370.72 bringing total costs to £158,818.02.
