22. Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the representations, if any, he has made to the British Government regarding the reported promotion of Private Lee Clegg. [17763/95]

Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs (Mr. Spring): I instructed that the reported promotion of Private Clegg be raised with the British authorities through the Anglo-Irish Secretariat. As the Deputy will no doubt be aware, the concerns aroused by the handling of Private Clegg's case have been consistently conveyed to the British Government at the highest levels.

I understand that, contrary to media reports, Private Clegg has not in fact been promoted.
