Mr. E. O'Keeffe Mr. E. O'Keeffe
113. Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education the reason a grant for refurbishment works carried out to a school (details supplied) in County Cork has not been paid; if her attention has been drawn to the fact that this school is without heating; if she will have arrangements made as a matter of great urgency to have a full examination carried out at the school with a view to making payment to have the heating works carried out without further delay; and if her attention has been further drawn to the fact that the electrical wiring in the school is not satisfactory. [16718/95]
Minister for Education (Ms Bhreathnach) Niamh Bhreathnach
Minister for Education (Ms Bhreathnach): The refurbishment works at this school have recently been completed. The Office of Public Works in Cork will visit the school very shortly to report on the completed works. As soon as the report has been received, payment will be processed.
My Department is aware that the school is experiencing problems with its heating system. The school authorities were advised to instruct their electrical contractor to install a new boiler. Grant-aid amounting to 85 per cent of the cost will be furnished to the school following certification that the installation has been completed satisfactorily.
The school board of management has also drawn my Department's attention to the fact that the electrical wiring requires attention. The board has been advised to request a report on the matter from the electrical contractor and to furnish this report to my Department. When this report is considered by my Department's technical staff, the school authorities will be advised on the works, if any, which demand attention.
