Dáil Éireann - Volume 453 - 23 May, 1995 Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits. Mr. M. McDowell Mr. M. McDowell 162. Mr. M. McDowell asked the Minister for Social Welfare if his attention has been drawn to the fact that rent allowance is not payable during a period after the serving of the notice to quit on a tenant and prior to the making of a court order for eviction, during which period the landlord cannot accept rent; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that as a result many tenants find themselves facing a large bill for mesne rates in respect of which they have no assistance from his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9316/95] Minister for Social Welfare (Proinsias De Rossa) Proinsias De Rossa 678 Minister for Social Welfare (Proinsias De Rossa): The Department has been informed that cases where payment [678] of a “mesne rate” arise are very rare. The Department has issued no guidelines on the payment of “mesne rates” and the issue of a payment in such cases would be a matter for consideration by the relevant health board. However, this issue will be kept under review in the light of any evidence arising on such cases. Dáil Éireann 453 Written Answers. Social Welfare Benefits. Questions 19950523
