Written Answers. - Disciplinary Inquiries.

62. Mr. M. McDowell asked the Minister for Health his views on whether disciplinary inquiries carried out by the Medical Council's Fitness to Practise Committee should be held in public; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1783/95]

Minister for Health (Mr. Noonan, Limerick East): The question as to whether disciplinary inquiries carried out by the Medical Council's Fitness to Practise Committee should be held in public is a matter for the council itself. I understand that this issue is currently under consideration.

The Deputy will appreciate that it may not be possible, in many cases, to carry out these inquiries in public in order to protect the privacy of the patient and the doctor.
