Written Answers. - DIRT Repayments.

[1507] 73. Mr. M. McDowell asked the Minister for Finance the amount of DIRT repayments made in the tax year 1993 to 1994 under Section 39 of the Finance Act, 1986, to elderly and incapacitated persons. [2560/94]

Minister for Finance (Mr. B. Ahern): I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the available statistics on refunds of deposit interest retention tax do not distinguish between refunds made to approved charities, those made to individuals aged 65 and over and those made to incapacitated individuals.

The total amount of such refunds made in 1993 the latest year for which the information is available, was £6.2 million. Most of this amount is likely to have been repaid to elderly and incapacitated persons.
