131. Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Health the number of women in Ireland [1791] who died of breast cancer for each of the years from 1990 to date; the information, if any, his Department has regarding future expected trends in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Minister for Health (Mr. Howlin): The number of women who died from breast cancer for each of the years 1990 to 1992 is provided in the following table. The 1993 figure is not yet available.

With regard to expected future trends, the medium-term target, as set out in The Health Strategy, is to reduce the death rate from cancer in the under 65 age group by 15 per cent in the next ten years.
