Dáil Éireann - Volume 431 - 27 May, 1993

Written Answers. - Public Buildings and Monuments Access.

35. Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Finance the legislation that is in place regarding access to public buildings and monuments for the disabled; and if it is intended to introduce further legislation in the future.

Minister of State at the Department of Finance (Mr. Dempsey): Apart from access by the disabled to all new public buildings which is covered by the new Building Regulations introduced in 1992 by the Minister for the Environment I am [1147] not aware of legislation regarding access to public buildings and monuments.

The Commissioners of Public Works are of course required to give reasonable access to the public at State-owned national monuments. Legislative action generally would be a matter for the Minister for the Environment and Minister for Equality and Law Reform.
