Written Answers. - Primary School Remedial Teachers.

210. Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education the proposals, if any, she has for the appointment of remedial teachers to primary schools, from 1993 to 1996, and the criteria she will use to decide the schools which get a remedial teacher.

Minister for Education (Ms Bhreathnach): I am currently examining the scope for deployment of additional teaching resources to children with special educational needs.

The question of remedial teaching posts will form a key element in this consideration. In this connection the Porgramme for a Partnership Government provides for the recruitment of 500 remedial teachers by September, 1996.

The level of remedial need in primary schools is identified on the basis of data and information collected from schools [277] by my Department's Inspectorate. Available remedial teaching posts are then allocated on the basis of priority of need, as indicated by the information collected.
