Dáil Éireann - Volume 427 - 02 March, 1993

Written Answers. - Land Purchases.

83. Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for Justice the estimated number of EC nationals other than Irish who now own property in this country; if her attention has been drawn to the increase in the purchase of Irish land by EC nationals and others; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Minister for Justice (Mrs. Geoghegan-Quinn): The functions of my Department do not include a responsibility for maintaining comprehensive records in relation to the ownership of property in this country. The title to certain kinds of property [199] would of course be the subject of records in the Land Registry, but the task of compiling a comprehensive record by reference to the nationality of titleholders of even that property would be out of proportion to the benefits to be gained thereby. I am therefore unable to supply the information sought by the Deputy.
