334. Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Education the way in which the assessment of the numbers in need of remedial education has been made by her Department.

Minister for Education (Ms Bhreathnach): The level of remedial need in schools is identified on the basis of data and information collected from schools by my Department's Inspectorate and/or Psychological Service.

Available remedial teaching posts are [1183] then allocated on the basis of priority of need, as indicated by the information collected.

In this connection, the Programme for a Partnership Government provides for the recruitment of 500 remedial teachers by September 1996.
