Written Answers. - Urban Renewal Programme.

90. Mr. Leonard asked the Minister for the Environment if it is proposed to have a further phase of the urban renewal programme; and the criteria used in selected centres.

Minister of State at the Department of the Environment (Mr. Stagg): Areas were designated for urban renewal, in consultation with the local authorities concerned, taking into account such factors as the extent of urban decay and dereliction, the need for conservation and renewal, the potential for redevelopment and regional considerations. The present [438] programme is due to expire on 31 May 1994 and there are no firm proposals at present for its extension. I am, however, keeping the matter under review.
