286. Mr. Taylor asked the Minister for the Environment the present position regarding the provision of grants or loans for private householders whose fireplaces are in need of rebuilding arising from the damaging effects of some smokeless fuels, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Minister of State at the Department of the Environment (Mr. D. Wallace): No grants are available for the replacement of fireplaces. Loans, both secured and unsecured, may be available from local authorities for the carrying out of such work by persons eligible for local authority house improvement loans.
