Written Answers. - Prisoner's Transfer.
Mr. McCartan Mr. McCartan
155. Mr. McCartan asked the Minister for Justice his views on the apparent non-co-ordination between Arbour Hill prison and Beaumont Hospital for the transfer of prisoners for operative treatment, in view of the details of the case of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 7; if he will improve the system; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Minister for Justice (Mr. Flynn) Pádraig Flynn
Minister for Justice (Mr. Flynn): As the Deputy is aware, the offender in question has been attending Beaumont Hospital on a frequent basis since 2 May 1990 complaining of a perforated ear drum. He was admitted and had surgery peformed on 29 October 1990. The offender has recently complained that a further examination he was scheduled to have under anaesthetic has been postponed on four occasions. One such postponement arose because, due to an oversight, steps were not taken in the prison to ensure the offender was fasting from the previous night. Postponement on the other three occasions was at the request of Beaumont Hospital. A further appointment for the offender has been scheduled by the hospital for 27 March.
Accordingly, I am satisfied that, with the exception of the single occasion referred to above, there has not been a problem in this case of lack of co-ordination of the kind referred to in the question and that the medical services at Arbour Hill will continue to provide suitable care and appropriate specialist referral for the offender in question.
