Dáil Éireann - Volume 409 - 05 June, 1991

Written Answers. - Litter Prosecutions.

207. Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the number of prosecutions initiated under the Litter Act, 1982 for each of the past five years; if he proposes to launch a continued national campaign to highlight this unacceptable trend; if he will continue to back up community efforts in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Minister of State at the Department of the Environment (Miss Harney): Details as sought of prosecutions under the Litter Act, 1982 are set out in the following table.

As I have recently stated in reply to Question No. 60 of 30 May 1991, litter is the most obvious and persistent of our environmental problems, and a wide range of counter-measures is necessary to deal with it. I am at present considering a number of initiatives to improve the situation, including a national mixed [903] media campaign which would support and complement clean-up activities organised by local authorities and community groups.
