Written Answers. - Agriculture House.

36. Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Finance if he will outline the steps he has taken to have repairs carried out to the defects in Agriculture House, Kildare Street, Dublin 2; whether the technical studies have been completed; if not, the reason for same; the estimated cost of the remedial works; when such works will be undertaken; the length of time which they will last; if, in the interim period, he has plans to paint or otherwise improve the unsightly appearance of the temporary protective structures around the building; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Minister for Finance (Mr. A. Reynolds): A preliminary report prepared for the Commissioners of Public Works by a firm of consulting structural engineers was completed recently. It identifies the causes of spalling of concrete and cracking in some panels and outlines a number of possible solutions.

[527] Discussions are now in progress with the consultants to determine the most appropriate method of repair and to draw up a programme for its implementation.

The remedial works will be undertaken as quickly as possible but I am not in a position at this stage to say when they will commence, how long they will take or what they will cost.
