Dáil Éireann - Volume 402 - 01 November, 1990

Written Answers. - Roscommon Bridge Proposal.

50. Mr. Connor asked the Minister for the Environment if he has studied the three proposals his Department have received from Roscommon County Council on the construction of a new bridge at Athleague, County Roscommon; and if, in view of the acute need to allow this project to go ahead, he will sanction funds for the construction of the bridge from the 1991 road works fund.

Minister for the Environment (Mr. Flynn): In December 1986, Roscommon County Council submitted a preliminary report, prepared by consulting engineers, in respect of Athleague Bridge. The report, which considered three main proposals to improve the river crossing, recommended widening the existing bridge as the most appropriate solution. This recommendation was approved by my Department in March, 1987.

Contract documents for this proposal, submitted by the local authority, are at present under consideration in my Department and a decision will issue to the local authority as soon as possible.

The question of providing funds for the work will be considered when the road grants for 1991 are being determined.
