Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if he will outline his Department's plans to deal with the increased incidence of bacterial meningitis recorded in recent years. Minister for Health (Dr. O'Hanlon) Rory O'Hanlon 792 Minister for Health (Dr. O'Hanlon): The following figures show the incidence [792] of bacterial meningitis over the past seven years. 1983, 141 cases; 1984, 192 cases; 1985, 100 cases; 1986, 147 cases; 1987, 111 cases; 1988, 128 cases; 1989, 115 cases. These figures do not show any significant increase in the incidence of the disease in recent years. At the same time, the incidence of the disease is closely monitored at local level by directors of community care and at national level by medical officers at my Department and should any significant increase occur appropriate action will be taken.
