70. Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment if he is concerned that, despite the fact that there are over 1,000 persons waiting on the housing list in Cork city, only one house was completed in 1989; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Minister of State at the Department of the Environment (Mr. Connolly): I am aware of the local authority housing needs in Cork city. While the housing authority completed one house in 1989 they had approval for 19 others which were, in fact, commenced that year. For 1990 the corporation has approval to commence a further 42 houses. Apart from that, casual vacancies arising in the normal way in the corporation's housing stock release houses for reletting to those on the waiting list.
