Mrs. Fennell Mrs. Fennell
116. Mrs. Fennell asked the Minister for the Environment the amount of money which accrued to his Department from driving test charges in (a) 1987, (b) 1988 and (c) 1989; if the charge fully covers the cost of holding and advertising tests; and, if not, the amount which the excess constitutes for each test.
Minister for the Environment (Mr. Flynn) Minister for the Environment (Mr. Flynn)
Minister for the Environment (Mr. Flynn): Receipts from fees for driver testing for the three years were: £1,694,000, 1987; £1,560,000, 1988; £1,457,000, 1988.
In 1989, the income from fees was equivalent to 79 per cent of the estimated cost of the driver testing service. Fees for tests were increased with effect from 1 January 1990, and the increased fees are designed to enable the service to operate generally on a self-financing basis.
