Dáil Éireann - Volume 396 - 21 February, 1990

Written Answers. - Driving Test Charges.

116. Mrs. Fennell asked the Minister for the Environment the amount of money which accrued to his Department from driving test charges in (a) 1987, (b) [130] 1988 and (c) 1989; if the charge fully covers the cost of holding and advertising tests; and, if not, the amount which the excess constitutes for each test.

Minister for the Environment (Mr. Flynn): Receipts from fees for driver testing for the three years were: £1,694,000, 1987; £1,560,000, 1988; £1,457,000, 1988.

In 1989, the income from fees was equivalent to 79 per cent of the estimated cost of the driver testing service. Fees for tests were increased with effect from 1 January 1990, and the increased fees are designed to enable the service to operate generally on a self-financing basis.
