Mr. J. Bruton Mr. J. Bruton
259. Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education if surplus primary school places exist in any part of Ireland; if so, where such places exist; and the policy she has in regard to their use.
Minister for Education (Mrs. O'Rourke) Mary O'Rourke
Minister for Education (Mrs. O'Rourke): Demographic decline and population movement trends have created surplus school places in some areas of the country.
These surplus places are particularly concentrated in the centre of our larger cities such as Dublin and Cork. To provide more detailed information would involve a large volume of research for which staff are unavailable at this time. My Department are actively pursuing a policy of rationalising school resources including accommodation.
