246. Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Health the proposals, if any, he has to ensure that proper monitoring and objective evaluation including regular consultation with the probationer will take place during the probationary year under a consultant's common contract.

Minister for Health (Dr. O'Hanlon): Under clause 11.2 of the common contract, the assessment of the performance of a consultant during the probationary period is a matter for the employing health board or hospital. I am satisfied that health boards and hospitals are fully aware of their responsibilities under this provision.
