Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Justice the number of cases of alleged rape prosecuted in each of the Garda districts for the years 1984 to 1987 inclusive; and the number of those prosecutions which were successful. Minister for Justice (Mr. Collins) Gerard Collins Minister for Justice (Mr. Collins): The information sought by the Deputy is readily available in relation to Garda divisions but not districts. The number of cases of alleged rape in which criminal proceedings were commenced by the Garda Síochána and the number of convictions, in the years 1984 to 1987 inclusive, are given for each division in the tabular statement which is being circulated in the Official Report. It is possible that a conviction obtained in one year may relate to a prosecution commenced in a previous year.
