Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Environment whether the city and county of Dublin's water supply fully complies with drinking water standards imposed by the EC; the extent, if any, to which the said water supply is in breach of EC quality standards; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Minister for the Environment (Mr. Flynn): The EC Drinking Water Directive has been given effect in Irish law by the European Communities (Quality of Water Intended for Human Consumption) Regulations, 1988. It is a matter for sanitary authorities to ensure that the quality standards set in these regulations are complied with. I understand that the Dublin water supplies comply with the regulations with the exception of the Ballymore Eustace supply where there is difficulty in meeting the quality standard for aluminium and for which I have recently approved major investment which will overcome this difficulty. In this connection, I refer the Deputy to my reply to Questions Numbers 22 and 115 of 7 February 1989.
