33. Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Defence the number of faults which have been discovered in the new Steyr Aug A1 rifle which is on issue to the Permanent Defence Forces; if the contract with the manufacturers provides for replacements where major faults are identified; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Minister for Defence (Mr. Noonan, Limerick West): The Steyr rifle was purchased after extensive testing by the Defence Forces over a two year period and has proved to be very satisfactory. In a small number of cases where minor defects have been found, arrangements have been made with the manufacturer for the replacement of the defective components.
