Minister for Foreign Affairs (Mr. Lenihan) Brian (Snr.) Lenihan
Minister for Foreign Affairs (Mr. Lenihan): Ambassadors of the EC member states in Santiago acting on behalf of the Twelve, including Ireland, have called on the head of the Vicaria de la Solidaridad Organisation to express the support of the Twelve for its activities at this time of difficulty and to make clear that they deplore any harassment of the organisation or interference with its legitimate role of safeguarding human rights.
At our request, the representatives of the Twelve in Santiago are investigating the allegation that two staff members of the “Vicaria” have been arrested. So far they have not been able to establish a basis for the report.
