Written Answers. - Speed Limits.

266. Mr. P. O'Malley asked the Minister for the Environment his views on whether freight transport costs would be significantly reduced by increasing the road speed limits for lorries; if he has any plans to change the speed limits; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Minister for the Environment (Mr. Flynn): While some savings in transport costs would be achieved by increases in the legal maximum speed limits, a number of other factors must be taken into account in determining these limits.

The general question of revising speed limits is being considered in the context of the preparation of the Blueprint for Road Development.
