Written Answers. - Hospital Charge.

159. Mrs. Hussey asked the Minister for Health if he will urgently intervene to sort out the confusion between the Eastern Health Board and the VHI regarding a bill for £400 for the drug chymopian, which threatens to halt the necessary spinal operation in April for a person (details supplied) in County Wicklow.

Minister for Health (Dr. O'Hanlon): I understand that this charge was levied on the person concerned while a patient in Dr. Steevens Hospital. As Dr. Steevens Hospital was a public voluntary hospital at that time no charges should have been made for medical extras such as drugs.

I have asked the authorities in Dr. Steevens Hospital to write directly to the person concerned with a full explanation [1895] as to why this charge was made and, if appropriate, to refund these moneys.
