Written Answers - Public Health Nurses.

40. Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Health the number of public health nurses; the ratio per population; and the way in which this compares with the norm set by the report on Public Health Nursing, in each community care area of each health board.

Minister for Health (Dr. O'Hanlon): The number of public health nurses on [149] 30 June 1987 was 1,345. The ratio of public health nurses per population was 1:2558 on that date. This compares favourably with the ratio of 1:2616 recommended in the report (Survey of Workload of Public Health Nurses).

Figures are not available centrally, for community care areas. It would not be practicable for my Department to keep an ongoing record of changes in the redeployment of public health nurses.
