55. Dr. McCarthy asked the Taoiseach the total number of people at present on the unemployment live register; the number who are on (1) unemployment benefit; (2) unemployment assistance and (3) credited contributions; the equivalent figures at this time in each of the years 1981 to 1985 inclusive; and if he will give a breakdown of these figures for those under 25 years of age and 20 years of age for these periods.

The Taoiseach: (i) The following table shows the number of persons on the live register who are in receipt of unemployment benefit, unemployment assistance, and signing for credited contributions at the end of December 1981 to 1985 and distinguishing those under 25 years of age.

(ii) The only age breakdown available with the monthly live register relates to persons under 25 years of age. A special age analysis of the live register is carried out on a quarterly basis in respect of second last Friday of January, April, July, and October. This analysis classifies the number of persons on the live register into age groups and sex. The age groups shown are, under 20 years, 20-24 years, 25-34 years, 35-44 years, 45-54 years, 55-59 years, 60-64 years. The following table shows the number of persons under 20 years on the live register at October 1981 to October 1984 and 19 July 1985, the latest date for which figures are available.

56. Mr. Faulkner asked the Taoiseach the number of building and construction workers who are unemployed.

The Taoiseach: A special industrial analysis of the live register is carried out in respect of the second Friday of each month. On 8 November 1985, the latest date for which figures are available, there were 45, 101 persons on the live register whose previous employment had been in the sector building, contracting and works of construction.
