Written Answers. - Roscommon County Hospital.

48. Mr. Leyden asked the Minister for Health if he will proceed with the filling of the position of consultant obstetriciangynaecologist in the maternity unit in the County Hospital, Roscommon; and the reasons for the long delay in appointing this specialist as approved by Comhairle na nOspideál.

Minister for Health (Mr. B. Desmond): I am simply not in a position to provide the additional funds which would be necessary to provide a full obstetric service at Roscommon County Hospital and I would indeed question the viability of introducing such a service considering that full consultant staffed obstetric services which are capable of catering for Roscommon mothers are already available in the Western Health Board area.
