57. Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment the number of vehicles, by relevant category, estimated to be liable for testing in the year ending 31 December 1985.

Minister for the Environment (Mr. Kavanagh): The present estimate of the number of vehicles, by relevant category, liable for testing in the year ending 31 December 1985 is, as follows:

Goods vehicles (exceeding 1½ tons unladen weight)	31,300
Trailers and semi-trailers	6,200
Passenger vehicles (more than eight passenger seats)	4,500
Ambulances	800
Total	42,800

This estimate is based on the number of vehicles licensed at 30 September 1984. The number liable to be tested may be reduced having regard to the obsolescence of older vehicles and to the fact that certain vehicles may no longer be in use on public roads. The above figures are subject to review in the light of the results of the census of vehicles licensed at 30 September 1985.
