578. Mrs. Geoghegan-Quinn asked the Minister for Communications if he will state in respect of his own Department and each semi-state body for which he is responsible, whether the appointment of equality officers has been made; and if not, when such appointments may be made.

Minister for Communications (Mr. J. Mitchell): No equality officer has been appointed in my Department as structures already exist in the Civil Service for dealing with all issues relating to equality of opportunity.

The Government policy statement on “Equality of Opportunity between Men and Women in Employment” was circulated to the State bodies under the aegis of my Department but the question of the appointment of equality officers is a matter for each of the bodies concerned.
