Written Answers. - Import Licence.

714. Mr. L. Fitzgerald asked the [1570] Minister for Agriculture if his Department will grant a licence to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 5 who wishes to import three parrots into the country from England and is prepared to meet all the statutory requirements and regulations pertaining to quarantine and certification; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Minister for Agriculture (Mr. Deasy): Strict controls on imports of all live birds, including cage birds, introduced last year because of widespread outbreaks in Britain of Newcastle disease in poultry and of a related type virus disease — Para-myxovirus disease — in pigeons have now been relaxed. An import licence for parrots will be issued provided the birds have passed an official HI test for Newcastle disease and are accompanied by a veterinary health certificate. On importation into this country the parrots must undergo quarantine at an approved premises.
