Written Answers. - Residential Care.

523. Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Health the entitlements of severely mentally handicapped children to residential care; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Minister for Health (Mr. B. Desmond): The entitlements of children with severe mental handicap to residential care have [772] not been formally specified. Present policy in relation to the provision of residential care for mentally handicapped children, with the exception of short term care or temporary relief, is that it should be offered and available if other alternatives are regarded as unsuitable.
