Written Answers. - Prison Officers Housing.

646. Mr. Hyland asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of the very poor housing conditions under which some prison officers at Portlaoise reside; if he will give reasons for the delay in having the new housing scheme completed; and if he will indicate the definite date on which they will be allocated.

Minister for Justice (Mr. Noonan, Limerick East): The new housing at Portlaoise Prison for Prison Service personnel is now completed and is being taken over from the contractor on 1 November. It is expected that the houses will be allocated to eligible staff very shortly afterwards.
