712. Mr. MacSharry asked the Minister for Education if grants are available for the physically handicapped and the mentally handicapped for attending sporting fixtures abroad.

Minister for Education (Mrs. Hussey): My Department operates a scheme of grants to assist national sports organisations towards the cost of hosting major international sports events and participating in such events abroad. National organisations which provide sporting programmes for physically handicapped and mentally handicapped are eligible to apply for assistance under the scheme.

In 1984 my Department has allocated £10,000 to the Irish Wheelchair Association towards the cost of sending a team to the Olympics for the Disabled and £1.000 to the Irish Kidney Association to [2115] assist towards the cost of sending a team to the Transplant Olympics.
