569. Mr. F. Fahey asked the Minister for Education if she will consider extending higher education grants to each scheme to cover students who study part-time or who partake in night courses at third level colleges.

Minister for Education (Mrs. Hussey): It is not proposed in connection with the formulation of local authorities (higher education grants) schemes in 1984 to include a provision for the payment of the grants to students other than those following full-time courses. It would not be feasible within the financial resources available to provide for the payment of such grants to part-time day students, or students attending night courses, at the present time.
