683. Mr. N. Treacy asked the Minister for Justice if he has any proposals to update the criminal law relating to theft in this country; if he will set up a commission to investigate the situation; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Minister for Justice (Mr. Noonan, Limerick East): While it would no doubt be beneficial to have the law of theft reviewed, this would be a substantial undertaking and there is a question of priorities as between it and the review of the other aspects of the law, criminal and [930] civil. Any proposals I may at a later stage have and of which the Government approve in relation to the law of theft will be announced in the normal way.
