496. Mr. N. Andrews asked the Minister for Labour if he will remove the exclusion provisions of the Employment Equality Act, 1977, which permit the armed forces and the Garda to give preference to men when recruiting.

Minister for Labour (Mr. Quinn): The question of modifying section 12 of the Employment Equality Act, 1977, which excludes, inter alia, employment in the Defence Forces and in the Garda Síochána from the application of the Act, is at present under consideration.
