Mr. Bell asked the Minister for the Environment the number of (a) qualified, (b) 1st year, (c) 2nd year, (d) 3rd year and (e) 4th year apprentices in each local authority; the policy in relation to the level of apprenticeships at local authority level; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Minister for the Environment (Mr. Kavanagh): The employment of apprentices, in common with other non-officer grades, is a matter for each local authority and one in which I have no function. On the basis of information supplied by [2399] local authorities the following are the numbers of apprentices employed by each local authority as at 31 December 1982, the latest date for which figures are available. These figures do not give any breakdown regarding the numbers of such apprentices in the different years of apprenticeship.
