Written Answers. - Music Teacher Qualifications.

313. Mr. De Rossa asked the Minister for Education the qualifications that are acceptable to her Department in respect of teachers of piano and other instruments where tuition in these instruments exist and specifically if a licenciate in piano teaching from a regional college is regarded as a sufficient qualification for teachers in instrument tuition schemes.

Minister for Education (Mrs. Hussey): The qualifications in music required for [2562] appointment to a post as teacher of music in a secondary, vocational, community or comprehensive school is the degree in music of a recognised degree-awarding authority or an approved equivalent qualification.

Regional technical colleges are not empowered to award a qualification in music recognised as equivalent to a university degree for the purpose of the appointment of teachers.
