337. Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Finance the total (a) national debt and (b) foreign debt at 30 September 1983; and the amount of this debt which was incurred during the years 1977-1981.

Minister for Finance (Mr. Dukes): The estimated total national debt at 30 September 1983 was £15,000 million of which £6,720 million was foreign currency debt. During the years 1977-1981 the total national debt increased by £6,583 million from £3,612 million to £10,195 million; the Exchequer's foreign currency debt increased by £2,754 million from £1,040 million to £3,794 million in the same period. At the exchange rates obtaining at end-September 1983 the value of the end-1976 foreign currency debt would have been £1,407 million and the value of the end 1981 foreign currency debt would have been £4,576 million.
