Mr. H. Byrne Mr. H. Byrne
418. Mr. H. Byrne asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry the steps he is taking to offset the recent measures taken by the Government which will lessen the activity of gun clubs; and therefore reduce levels of conservation.
Minister for Fisheries and Forestry (Mr. O'Toole) Paddy O'Toole
Minister for Fisheries and Forestry (Mr. O'Toole): I cannot accept the suggestion implicit in the question.
In so far as my Department are concerned, while it has not been possible this year, for reasons of financial stringency, to provide funds for game development undertaken by regional game councils, the absence of the relatively small level of such funding when applied to individual gun clubs should not adversely affect the level of conservation to any appreciable extent, especially as the advisory service provided by the Forest and Wildlife Service to assist game and wildlife conservation projects continues to be maintained.
