Written Answers. - Sandyford Road, County Dublin.
Mr. S. Brennan Mr. S. Brennan
221. Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for the Environment if he will agree to upgrade Sandyford Road, County Dublin, to national status in view of its appalling safety record and the enormous volume of traffic now using it; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Minister for the Environment (Mr. Spring) Dick Spring
Minister for the Environment (Mr. Spring): The designation of a road as one of national status is based on objective criteria including in particular the question of important interlinkage with the national route network. The Sandyford Road did not meet these criteria when the national road classification was formalised in 1977 and developments since then do not appear to warrant an alteration of its present status as a regional road.
I am aware that Dublin County Council, who as road authority are responsible for the maintenance and improvement of the Sandyford Road, have included substantial improvements to it as an objective in their draft development plan and have additionally been carrying out certain interim improvements for its greater safety.
