104. Mr. D. Andrews asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the concern expressed by the boards of management of certain schools in the Dublin city and county area and elsewhere at the decision to phase out caretakers and secretaries in primary schools, she will now reconsider the decision; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Minister for Education (Mrs. Hussey): The decision to phase out the caretaker and clerk-typist schemes was adopted by the previous Government in connection with the preparation of the Estimates for Public Services 1983 and confirmed in the financial statement of the Minister for Finance of 9 February 1983 — page 6 of Principal Features of Budget.
