Dáil Éireann - Volume 344 - 07 July, 1983

Written Answers. - Disciplinary Action Against Gardaí.

26. Mr. Gregory-Independent asked the Minister for Justice the number of cases of disciplinary action pending against gardaí that have been deferred due to civil proceedings taken by the gardaí involved.

Minister for Justice (Mr. Noonan, Limerick East): Under the terms of the Garda Síochána (Discipline) Regulations, 1971, the taking of disciplinary action against a member of the force is a matter for the Commissioner.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that at present disciplinary proceedings have been adjourned in one case and deferred in another pending the outcome of High Court proceedings.

In a further case, the disciplinary proceedings, which had been adjourned pending the outcome of civil proceedings, were due to be resumed on 5 July but were again adjourned because of the absence on certified sick leave of the member concerned.

All but one of the members involved are on suspension.
